‘An Inspector Calls’ for more

Stephen Daldry’s revival of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, An Inspector Calls, first opened at the National Theatre in 1992. It was a great success, receiving three Olivier Awards for Best Revival, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress. The show transferred to the West End, where it enjoyed a two-year season, and then opened on Broadway, where it received an unprecedented number of awards including four Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards.

The 2009 revival started out at the Novello, where a Stage Technologies power flying system had previously been installed in 2007. Late last year, An Inspector Calls then moved on to the Wyndhams, a hemp theatre where the production team wanted to keep the same repeatable effect they were able to produce with the Novello’s automation system. So a single-axis rental system was provided in the new venue to perfectly recreate the ‘inebriated’ curtain-raise.

This psychological thriller has been hailed as the theatrical event of our generation, winning more awards than any other play in history. An Inspector Calls run through to March 20th.

Daily Telegraph: ‘Stephen Daldry’s thrilling award-laden production has returned. The defining production of the 1990s, a work of great directorial daring, breathtaking visual invention and passionate moral urgency’.
