The Royal Festival Hall stands at the heart of Southbank Centre complex and is a key attraction of one of London’s most famous cultural strips that stretches along the banks of the River Thames. Opened in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain, the Hall is one of the world’s leading performance venues.

The Royal Festival Hall undertook much-needed and extensive refurbishment in 2006 and reopened in June 2007. Stage Technologies were contracted for the design, supply and installation of the overstage machinery and control system. This included:

  • Solo handheld controllers
  • MaxisID control system
  • 23 BigTow winches
  • Control for traverse of four, large lighting bridges, capable of lifting 6,000kg and tracking up and down stage - three of these bridges have integral and independent flying bars that can lift weights of up to 1,000kg
  • Control for traverse of three, 2,000kg loudspeaker hoists
  • Control for three 1,000kg lighting bars above rear choir area
  • Control for a goods lift from auditorium to roofspace
  • The overstage support framework allows touring shows to rig 2000kg chainhoists at over 50 dedicated hanging points covering the complete stage area.
  • 11 stage lifts
  • 2 stall lifts
  • 50 fixed speed axes for acoustic tapestry tracks, roller banners, reflectors and concertina banners
  • 12 chain hoist axes
